Lacks of Communication

The sad story of a muliebrity once proficient of life and vigor all began on one wet day, January 29, 1951 (Skloot 13). A surgeon, without asking the woman if she wanted to be a donor, picked up a sharp knife and shaved both dime-sized pieces of tissue from [her] cervix: one from her tumor, and one from the healthy cervical tissue nearby (Skloot 33). These samples were given to George Gey. He was a researcher at John Hopkins and in pursuit of an immortal kiosk line of human cells that perpetually reproduce and provide an undated supply of cells for research. Fortunately for him, this woman showed up at the advanced time. Her cells would become the famous immortal cell line, called HeLa, which he had been seek for. Unknown for a number of years was this woman, named Henrietta Lacks, who innocently donated her cells without each permission.
Although the HeLa cell line has been the foundation for numerous medical advances, the woman who donated the tissue and her family lived, and still live a meager life.
