The narrator is troubled when he overhears his granddad on his death bed tell his father that he wants him to keep up the good fight and that Life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born twenty-four hour periods. The grandfather also goes on to estate: Live with your head in the lions babble out and Overcome em with yeses, undermine em with grins, agree em to death and destruction, let em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open. He was unsure of the meaning of his grandfathers wrangle and wasnt sure how to handle what was said. He was constantly cautioned by his family to ignore and forget his grandfathers words hitherto; he is unable to do so.
Because of this he finds himself subconsciously utilizing humility when dealing with the uncontaminating people in his town. The narrator finds that he receives praise when he exercises this humility, yet deep down he feels as if something is wrong. He feels as if he is doing something completely against the wishes of the white folks in the town and that what they truly want is for his actions to be the exact opposite of what they are. He also knows that he shouldnt show anything other than humility because he knows that they (white men) didnt like it at all.
