One has proved this reflection on the relationship between residential district and oneself that causes requirement of a balance wheel we all try to maintain, the balance between our identities as an extraordinary individualists and our identities as functioning members in our community. As Rodriguez argues, there are still pain, tension, and magic in this struggle to attain the balance, especially the conflict and appropriate achievement of language identities. In his short story, Rodriguez presents the concept of all flock being required to utilize private language and familiar language. In The Chinese in All of Us, Richard Rodriguez discusses two incompatible kinds of languages, but one very much linked to abidance with community standards. Children of immigrant or minority parents often face the quarrel of behaving appropriately at crustal plate, according to the standards of their familys culture, yet cultivating a different way of speaking and behaving for the outside, American environment.

Attempts to assimilate or combine two cultures often result in rejection or hostility from the persons family and immediate ethnic community, forcing the individual to either develop different personas, one for each discrete environment, or choose one community over another. Richard Rodriguez describes the hassle and pressure of ethnic authenticity for a friend of his: when she was the barely black student in her classâ€"remembers coming home to North Carolina. She remembers getting off the Greyhound bus. She remembers walking up the paving material on the hot early summer day.
